Can High-Quality Colours Have a Greener Footprint? Rethinking Sustainability in the Colour Industry

Colour brings products to life—from food and medicines to cosmetics and personal care products. But behind every vibrant shade lies a manufacturing process that requires energy, water, raw materials and careful chemical management. As industries worldwide work toward reducing their environmental impact, an important question emerges: Can brilliant colours be manufactured with a greener footprint?

At Neelikon, we believe the answer lies in continuously improving how colours are manufactured—without compromising the quality, purity and consistency our customers expect.

Reducing the Energy Behind Every Shade

Colour manufacturing involves multiple energy-intensive processes. Therefore, understanding where and how energy is consumed is an important first step towards reducing environmental impact.

Neelikon monitors the consumption of electricity, steam, fuel and coal, along with Scope 1 and Scope 2 and sustainable procurement under Scope 3 for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, to identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint.

Renewable energy is another important part of this journey. Neelikon has installed a 1 MW solar energy unit, currently accounting for approximately 25% of its total electricity consumption. The company plans to expand its renewable energy capacity with an additional solar installation, with the objective of covering its electricity requirements through solar power.

Sustainability Goes Beyond Energy

Responsible colour manufacturing also requires careful management of chemicals, raw materials and waste.

Neelikon evaluates chemicals used in manufacturing through detailed Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and HAZOP studies. Understanding chemical hazards at the process-design and operational stages helps identify risks, improve process safety and explore opportunities for safer manufacturing.

Managing Environmental Impact Responsibly

Manufacturing facilities must consider not only what happens inside the plant but also their impact on the surrounding environment.

Neelikon’s environmental management initiatives include wastewater treatment, solid and liquid waste management, stack monitoring and noise monitoring. The company also works towards protecting local biodiversity and ensuring that its operations follow responsible environmental practices.

These initiatives are complemented by Neelikon’s participation in sustainability and ethical assessment platforms such as SEDEX (SMETA) and EcoVadis, reinforcing the company’s approach to responsible business practices.

A Continuous Journey Towards Greener Colours

Sustainable manufacturing is not achieved through one technology, certification or project. It requires continuous measurement, investment and improvement across energy, water, chemicals, waste, procurement and people.

For Neelikon, the objective is clear: to continue delivering brilliant, high-quality colours while progressively reducing the environmental footprint behind them.

Because the future of colour should not only be brighter—it should also be greener.
